A Wise Herb Once Said …

As we concentrate on ways to maintain our health, nature and herbs can play an important role in our skin, hair and wellness. This month, at The Greenhouse Day Spa, we are focusing on sage, which has been used since the Roman days for its positive effect on the body. While best known as an ingredient for cooking, this herb is available fresh, dried or in oil form.

The important health benefits of sage include its ability to lower inflammation, prevent chronic diseases, boost the immune system, improve brain function and alleviate skin conditions.  Sage acts as:

  • Toner – If you have extremely oily skin, then sage is excellent to control excess oil secretion. It acts as a toner for the oily skin.
  • Anti Aging Support – It acts as an antioxidant and prevents the signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles It also helps in the regeneration of the cells.
  • Prevents Skin Diseases through its anti-bacterial property. Hence it can heal any minor skin infection or diseases like Eczema. It has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.

Its other names include common sage, garden sage and Salvia officinalis. It belongs to the mint family, alongside other herbs like oregano, rosemary, basil and thyme.

Fun Fact: The traditional use of sage in medicine is well-documented and goes back thousands of years. It was initially used for the treatment of snakebite, protecting against evil, boosting female fertility, and other uses no longer en vogue today.

The Proof is in the Pumpkin!

This month at The Greenhouse Day Spa, we are pumped up to highlight the star of the month of October.

Pumpkin is a loaded with Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant as well as beta-carotene, a Vitamin A derivative. These work together on several levels to soften the skin and boost its collagen production to prevent the signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots. On an Antioxidant level, the Vitamin C and beta-carotene work together to reverse UV damage and free radical damage, two major culprits for wrinkles and worse yet, skin cancer.

If acne is your enemy, then the old Jack-O-Lantern might just be your best friend. Pumpkin is full of B vitamins such as niacin, riboflavin, B6 and folate. Niacin improves circulation, and hence, is beneficial in treating acne. Folate helps to increase circulation, which improves cell turnover and renewal. The Zinc in pumpkin seeds is beneficial for acne sufferers as it helps control hormone levels and oil production, as well as assists with healing of the skin.

Now that you know that Pumpkin will give you youthful, acne-free skin, let’s put a cherry on top with the fact that it helps brighten your skin. Pumpkin contains fruit enzymes and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which increase cell turnover. This is amazing for treating a dull complexion, aging skin and pigmentation.

FUN FACT: The original jack-o’-lanterns were made with turnips and potatoes by the Irish. In England, they used large beets and lit them with embers to ward off evil spirts. Irish immigrants brought their customs to America, but found that pumpkins were much easier to carve!

Lemons, Limes and Grapefruits … oh my!

This month at The Greenhouse Day Spa, we are pleased to highlight the benefits of the citrus family to your skin. Let’s admit it most of us have had a love-hate relationship with citrus fruits. While all of us love to devour the juicy and sumptuous flavors of these fruits, at the same time we are also wary of not biting into a sour one. But the truth is, the more citrusy the content of the fruit, the more is the vitamin C content it contains.

The family of juicy fruits not only includes lemons, lime, oranges and grapefruit, but also tangerines, mandarins, and less widely eaten fruits, such as pomelos and kumquats. Their vitamin C content is legendary, and regular consumption of these citruses can help reduce the risk of heart diseases, kidney stones and infections of all kinds. They boost good digestion and have alkalizing and detoxifying properties. In addition to being a source of health benefits, citrus fruits can also do wonders for your skin.

The rich vitamin C content of citrus fruits can effectively fight the free radical action, which prevents skin ageing. Their citric acid helps curb the bacterial action and pathogens present under the skin making your skin glow naturally. As you age, your body’s ability to produce collagen decreases, and the elasticity of your skin takes a hit too. According to Macrobiotic Nutritionist and Health Practitioner Shilpa Arora ND, “Vitamin C is critical for skin health. It helps repair and rejuvenate the skin, helping in wound healing and building connective tissue.” Vitamin C helps prevent damage done by pollution and UV rays too.

All the more reason to treat yourself with this month’s Citrus Scent-sation. Come in to the spa for a Mandarin Orange Body Scrub, select the Orange You Jelly Cleanser or add a Vitamin C ampoule to any facial!

Fun fruit fact:

The terms “ripe” and “mature” are usually used synonymously, but they mean different things. A mature fruit is one that has completed its growth phase. Ripening is the changes that occur within the fruit after it is mature to the beginning of decay. These changes usually involve starches converting to sugars, a decrease in acids, softening, and change in the fruit’s color.

May 2020

Dear clients,

At The Greenhouse Day Spa, the health and well-being of you, our valued clients, our staff, and the community are our top priority. I write to you today to provide an update on what we have been doing behind the scenes and what lies ahead.

Our mission at The Greenhouse Day Spa is to support your complete health and wellness. As a member of the spa community, we have always adhered to and exceeded the strict sanitation guideline set forth by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. It has always been our practice to take preventative actions to limit potential exposure to any viruses or bacteria.

With a new normal in place, below are the specific steps we are taking to ensure your safety as we welcome you back to the spa:

  • Our treatment rooms, equipment and instruments have always been disinfected and sterilized between clients. We use a hospital grade cleanser to sterilize all tools. Additionally, we are now disinfecting shared surfaces such as door handles, bathroom fixtures, product displays and our front desk area throughout the day.
  • Our therapists will wear a face mask and gloves during treatments. For treatments requiring closer contact, such as facials and eyebrow treatments, our team will also wear face shields for additional protection for both parties.
  • Sanitizing supplies, including alcohol-based hand sanitizers, will available to clients and staff upon entering and exiting the spa.
  • For all our team members, we have frequent communications regarding the spa’s safety protocols and stringent sanitation policies to ensure compliance with any changes requested by governing authorities.
