A Wise Herb Once Said …

As we concentrate on ways to maintain our health, nature and herbs can play an important role in our skin, hair and wellness. This month, at The Greenhouse Day Spa, we are focusing on sage, which has been used since the Roman days for its positive effect on the body. While best known as an ingredient for cooking, this herb is available fresh, dried or in oil form.

The important health benefits of sage include its ability to lower inflammation, prevent chronic diseases, boost the immune system, improve brain function and alleviate skin conditions.  Sage acts as:

  • Toner – If you have extremely oily skin, then sage is excellent to control excess oil secretion. It acts as a toner for the oily skin.
  • Anti Aging Support – It acts as an antioxidant and prevents the signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles It also helps in the regeneration of the cells.
  • Prevents Skin Diseases through its anti-bacterial property. Hence it can heal any minor skin infection or diseases like Eczema. It has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.

Its other names include common sage, garden sage and Salvia officinalis. It belongs to the mint family, alongside other herbs like oregano, rosemary, basil and thyme.

Fun Fact: The traditional use of sage in medicine is well-documented and goes back thousands of years. It was initially used for the treatment of snakebite, protecting against evil, boosting female fertility, and other uses no longer en vogue today.
